About 5 years ago, I was sitting on the pier at Surfside beach fishing. I was eating goat cheese and grapes. I had been a little concerned about how our society was crumbling. I am a Christian and felt God was telling me to get prepared. Learning to be more self sufficient was where I would start. I am not a born writer so I am gonna share straight from my heart. I am not concerned with correct grammer as I write. Ok, back to the subject at hand. Sitting on that pier, I thought " What if I got me some goats and made my own cheese?"
On the way home my hubby and I had a discussion about getting some goats. It turned into a heated discussion as I wanted them and he did not. I actually was not too nice about it. He ended up saying a reluctant yes. Anyway, I decided to get Nigerian Dwarf goats because I could milk them and they were small enough to handle and cute. I bought my first buck and doe and off we went. After my doe kidded, I tried her milk. It was delicious. Only problem was, I got sick when I would drink it. I tried little tiny bits but every time I tried it I got sick. It went on for a while. This was very upsetting for me. So I prayed about it and asked God why? He told me because I was ugly to my husband and pushed my will to get the goats. I went and repented to my husband about being so pushy about having my way. Believe it or not, after that I never got sick again.
I got my dairy license because you cannot give or sell milk without it. It took my hubby a while to build the room for the dairy. I milked and sold for a while but it was not profitable considering I only had a few does to milk.
I looked up a receipe and starting making my own soaps. It was really just for fun, but people started liking them and wanting to buy some. I had my daughter in law Lindsay to make me some labels. She is good at that kind of stuff. Now I am selling them all over town and doing well. I also started making lotions to sell. I had a nice man in my church give me gallons of goat milk to freeze for soap. Thank you Jim Lynch. I make lip balm also.
My last venture was making home made goat milk fudge. I can't do anything half way, so I got a granite piece to turn my fudge out on like the professionals do. I also got a copper pot and they aren't cheap. I am selling my fudge now. It did turn out really good. Now I see why my hubby balked when I asked to get goats. He knew he was in for building and helping.
Now my business is more than a hobby. It takes a lot of my time. I love to do new things and will try about anything. On my next blog, I will tell you about a new thing I am trying. Its Kefir. Until next time......
